First I sanded the piece so the primer would adhere to it, using 60 grit paper, I didn’t sand heavily as my automatic sander did my work for me

So, for your piece, I recommend running a craft or box knife under the edges of the support blocks to cut them free from most of the glue, and then gently tap them loose with a small hammer
